What is the 2022-2023 Malawi budget statement about?
Malawi 2022-2023 budget statement is an official document and roadmap by the government of Malawi that details exactly how the current Tonse Alliance Government will spend the money it generates through taxes, loans and grands from various partners from different sectors. Below is a quote from the document:
“Madam Speaker, in appointing me as his Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, President Chakwera has demonstrated his resolve to include the youth as part of the long walk to this country’s economic and developmental emancipation. I most sincerely thank the president for his trust in me in particular, and the youth in this country in general. I pledge to do my best to ensure that the agenda of the Tonse Alliance Government led by His Excellency the State President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera is fulfilled in totality sooner
than later.”

Important changes in the 2022/2023 budget statement
- Total Expenditure for the 2022-2023 year: K2.84 trillion kwacha.
- Education sector: K462 billion kwacha.
- Agriculture sector: K447 billion kwacha.
- Health sector: K283 billion kwacha.
- Civil servants salaries and wages increased to K670 billion kwacha.
- VAT removed from cooking oil, tap water, energy spare parts and sanitary pads.
- Deficit goes up to K885 billion kwacha from K718 billion kwacha.
- CDF(constituency development fund) from K40 million kwacha to K100 million kwacha.
- AIP reduced from K142 billion kwacha to K109 billion kwacha.
